This adorable little jacket with hood, is knit in a DK weight yarn.

Note:
Instructions are given for the smallest size with instructions for the larger sizes in ( ) round brackets. Metric measurements are given in [ ] square brackets.

Tension/Gauge in stocking stitch:
22 stitches and 30 rows on a 4 mm (US6) needle or whichever size is needed to obtain the required tension.

Measurements:
To fit 6 to 9 months, (12-18 months, 18 months -2 years, 3-4 years, 5 to 6 years)
Chest size 18 (20, 22, 24, 26) inches [46(51, 56, 61, 66) cm]
Finished chest size 21 (24, 25, 28, 30) inches [54 (60, 65, 71, 76) cm]
Length 12 (13, 15, 19, 21) inches [32 (34, 39, 48, 53) cm]
Sleeve length (can be changed to suite) 6, (8, 10, 11, 13) inches [17 (20,25, 29, 33) cm]

Materials Required:
Any DK weight yarn which knits 22 stitches to 4 inches (10cm). Yarn: Main colour (MC) 412 (530, 636, 742, 848) metres or 460 (575, 690, 805, 1035) yards
Contrasting colour (CC) 106(106,106,212,212) metres or 115(115, 115, 230, 230) yards.
4 (5, 5, 6, 6) buttons.
One pair of 3.75 mm (US 5) and one pair of 4 mm (US 6) needles or the size needed to obtain the correct tension. Optionally one 3.75mm (US5) circular needle 80 cm (32 ins) long.

Note:
Garter st: Knit every row.
Stocking st: Knit first row, purl second row. Repeat these two rows.
K = knit. P=Purl. st(s) = stitch(es) tog=together

Special Instructions for Buttonhole Rows:
Make a buttonhole as follows: K2. Bring the yarn to the front. Slip the next st purlwise. Put yarn to the back. Cast off 3 sts as follows: * Slip the next st onto the right needle. Pass the second st over the slipped st and drop it off the needle.* Repeat * to * twice more. Slip the last st from the right needle to the left needle. Turn the work. Move the yarn to the back. Cast on 4 sts as follows: * Insert the right needle between the first and second st on the left needle, pass the yarn round the right needle and draw up a loop, and place it on the left needle.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. Turn the work and pass the yarn to the back. Slip the first st from the left needle to the right needle, and pass the last cast on st over it and drop it off the needle. K1

For knitters who want to cast off the shoulder seams together:
(makes a neater and stronger seam) At the end of the back, knit across and place 20 (22, 25, 27, 30) st on a st holder, cast off 20 (22, 22, 24, 24) st, knit across and place the remaining 20 (22, 25, 27, 30) st on a st holder.

At the end of each front, do not cast off the stitches. Transfer the back sts from a st holder to a spare needle. Place the front section right side to right side with the back section. Cast off the two parts together using a three needle cast off.

Back:

Using smaller needles and CC cast on 60 (66, 72, 78, 84) st. Knit 8 (8, 10, 10, 10) rows in garter st.
Change to larger needles and MC. Work in stocking st until the work measures 12 (13, 15, 19, 21) inches [32 (34, 39, 48, 53) cm] ending with a wrong side row. Cast off marking the centre 20 (22, 22, 24, 24) st.

Left Front:

Using smaller needles and CC, cast on 34 (38, 40, 44, 46) st and work 8 (8,10, 10, 10) rows in garter st.
Next Row. Using larger needles and MC, using stocking st knit to last 6 st. Turn and slip last 6 st onto a st holder. 28 (32,34 ,38, 40) st. Continue until front measures: 11 (11, 13, 17, 19) inches [29 (30, 35, 43, 48) cm] ending with a right side row.
Shape Neck.
Next Row. Cast off 4(5, 5, 6, 6) st and work to end. 24 (27, 29, 32, 34] st. *** Work 4 (5, 4, 5 ,4) rows decreasing 1 st at neck edge in every row. 20(22, 25, 27, 30] st. Continue without shaping until front measures 12 (13, 15, 19, 21) inches [32 (34, 39, 48, 53) cm] ending with a wrong side row. Cast off. ***

Right Front:

Using smaller needles and CC, cast on 34 (38, 40, 44, 46) st and work 8 (8,10, 10, 10) rows in garter st.
Next Row. Knit 6 st then slip these 6 st onto a st holder. 28 (32,34 ,38, 40) st left on needle. Change to MC and larger needles. Continue until right front measures: 11 (11, 13, 17, 19) inches [29 (30, 35, 43, 48) cm] ending with a wrong side row.
Shape Neck
Next Row. Cast off 4(5, 5, 6, 6) st and work to end. 24 (27, 29, 32, 34] st. Work from *** to *** as given for left front.

Sleeves (Both alike)

Using smaller needles and CC, cast on 32, (34, 34, 36, 38) st. Work 8 (8, 10,10,10) rows garter st. Change to MC and larger needles. Inc 1 st at each end of 5th and every following 2nd (2nd, 2nd, 4th, 4th ) row to 38 (46, 40, 64, 60) st, then on every following 4th (4th , 4th, 6th, 6th ) row to 52 (62, 66, 70, 74] st
Continue without shaping until sleeve measures 6 (8, 9, 11, 13) in [17, (20, 25, 29, 33)]cm, or length required, ending with a wrong side row.
Cast off.

Hood

Using larger needles and MC, cast on 61 (65, 65, 69, 69) st. Place a marker at the center st. Work in stocking st. and shape hood by increasing 1 st either side of the centre st at the end of 7th and on every following 6th (4th, :3rd, 3rd, 2nd ) row to 73 (79, 85, 91, 97) st.
Continue without shaping until hood measures 8 (9, 10, 10, 11) inches [22 (23, 25, 27, 29)]cm ending with a wrong side row. Knit to the center of the row. K2tog. K to end. Purl one row.

Either: cast off and fold hood in half along cast off edge, (wrong side inside) and sew the two halves together along the cast off edge:
Or: K 36(39, 42, 45, 48) sts. Fold work in half right side to right side, and cast off the two halves of the hood together using a three needle cast off.

Change to smaller needles (or circular needle), and CC. Pick up and knit 88 (92, 100, 106, 114) sts around hood opening. (Not the cast on or cast off edges). Work in garter st for 8 (8,10, 10, 10) rows. Cast off.

Borders

For a Boy
RIGHT FRONT BORDER
With wrong facing, using smaller needles and CC, cast on 1 St (cast on st to be used for sewing border to front), using garter st work across 6 st from st holder. 7 sts. ****Cont in garter st until border is of sufficient length to go up front, ending with a wrong side row. Cast off. Sew border in place and mark the position for 4 (5, 5, 6, 6) buttons, the first one 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) inches [ 2 (2, 4, 4, 5)cm], up from lower edge, the last one 2 rows down from top of border and the other 2 (3, 3, 4, 4) evenly placed between these two. ****

LEFT FRONT BORDER
With right side facing, using smaller needles and CC, cast on 1 st (cast on st to be used for sewing border to front), work across 6 sts left on st holder. 7 sts. Work to match Right Front Border working buttonholes to correspond with markers. Sew border in place.

For a Girl
LEFT FRONT BORDER
With right side facing, using smaller needles and CC, cast on 1 St (cast on st to be used for sewing border to front), work across 6 sts left on st holder. 7 sts. Work as given from **** to **** of Right Front Border for a boy.

RIGHT FRONT BORDER
With wrong side facing, using smaller needles and CC, cast on 1 St (cast on St to be used for sewing border to front), work across 6 st from st holder. 7 st. Work to match left border working button holes to correspond with markers. Sew border in place.

To Make Up

Join shoulder seams. Fold sleeves in half lengthwise, place fold to shoulder seam and sew in position. Join side seams and sleeve seems. Sew on buttons. Sew hood in position round neck.
